A Traditional Trapping Method - To Catch Gooseneck Barnacles

 Gooseneck Barnacles  

               Scientific Name - Pollicipes pollicipes

 There are many aquaculture systems in Sri Lanka, including 'Gooseneck Barnacles', (kind of a specific sea oyster with elongated legs to sticking to a certain surface) which are farmed for economical  purposes. And now, it could be observed that there is greater tendency for this  cultivation of marine  organisms. 

(Some species of gooseneck barnacles are pelagic and are most frequently found on tidewrack on oceanic coasts. Unlike most other types of barnacles, intertidal gooseneck barnacles depend on water motion rather than the movement of their cirri for feeding, and are therefore found only on exposed or moderately exposed coasts.) 

                               In Sri lanka,  people  used to call this creature as ' මට්ටින්' 

                      

🌊  A few  years ago,while on a trip to Trincomalee, I came across this type of barnacle trap by accident.  

🌊   I saw a dozen of these kinda traps in there. Though these kinds of traps kill oyster as well as other organisms. 

🌊 This oyster trapping technique is widely used in Northern and North East provinces of Sri Lanka.

🌊These creatures are semi - parasitic and breed on sturdy timbers and decaying ships and boats that grow along the seas to sustain their existence . 

🌊 Somehow,depending on the need for their species to breed they can live on the surface and in the water.Initially ,humans recognized  this behaviour of that Barnacles and they allow logs and plant trunks to log in places where barnacles are more likely to trap them. 

🌊When found a place to live, they gather altogether and grab the trunks with their claws,which were looks like their feet.

   Anatomy Of The Barnacles

🦑The body of these creatures is made up of the phenomenon of the tidal wave. As the seawater rises, the lid- like part of the animal's head opens.once opened, the lids close again when the tide recedes.

🌍In many countries barnacles are lightly boiled in brine. Nontheless In sri Lanka people used to eat this barnacles by using various kinds of spices as usual.🥘🍽️🥘

 🌊 So, these creatures are very expensive  and people says that they are very tasty after remove their shell while cooking.🐚

     🌊🐚🦑🐋🐠🐡️🐙 They have right to live freely and they no longer          need to be a delicious food 🐙🐡️🐠🐋🦑🐚
